‘Beyond Technique’

A beginning to intermediate kilncasting class with Steven Durow.

This course will explore the questions of ‘why’ inherent in any creative endeavor and students will be encouraged to create a personal list of questions as part of the process of creating their own work. Students will learn to work with small to medium sized sculptural forms including all aspects of refractory moldmaking, lost wax, kiln-firing, annealing and finishing techniques as well as discussion of form and content. Slides and discussion will further the discourse and give students an artistic context to their work. This course is designed for students who are new to kilncasting or just wish to take their craft and knowledge to the next level. Step-by-step instruction will allow time to address each student’s technical and aesthetic concerns. The goal of the course is to provide the tools necessary to allow the technique to become transparent so that the ideas show through!
